The Southern Resident orcas of the Salish Sea are magnificent creatures that face serious threats to their survival. A major threat to these endangered orcas and their food sources is toxic pollution resulting from the use of harmful chemicals in products.

Hazardous substances such as the “forever chemicals” called PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) escape millions of products and end up in waterways. They can contaminate water, fish, and ultimately orcas.

Many popular outdoor apparel brands use PFAS to waterproof their products—from jackets to boots. REI is one of the companies that uses and sells PFAS-laden products. But it doesn’t have to be this way. There are safer options that don’t result in widespread pollution that endangers orcas.

As a Seattle-based company, REI should be doing everything possible to protect orcas and lead the entire outdoor industry away from these dangerous chemicals.

Tell REI to protect the orcas of Puget Sound and ban PFAS from the products it sells!
