POSITION SUMMARY

Toxic-Free Future (TFF) is looking for a Mind the Store Program Manager to join our team! The Mind the Store Program Manager will play a leadership role in our Mind the Store program, challenging major corporations to adopt ground-breaking safer chemicals policies to reduce and eliminate dangerous chemicals and plastics and transform the marketplace to safer solutions.

As Mind the Store Program Manager, you will coordinate and execute a national inside/outside market campaign, serve as a lead analyst on the Retailer Report Card, and regularly engage with corporate leaders in sustainability. This position requires the ability to coordinate a dynamic national campaign pressuring the nation’s largest retailers, develop and execute outside campaign pressure tactics, undertake technical research, analyze and propose improvements to retailer chemical policies, manage projects, and serve as a spokesperson for the campaign to the media. The Manager will also work closely with our Senior Director of Programs and Strategy, Director of Government and Market Policy, Organizing Manager, Communications Director, Science Director, and other staff to press retailers to advance solutions that address toxic chemicals and plastics threatening the health of people and the planet.  

The Mind the Store Program Manager must be able to work collaboratively across the organization’s teams and with coalition partners and have strong communication skills. The role also requires self-discipline, flexibility, creativity, a positive attitude, and the desire to lead a comprehensive campaign that advances the organization’s mission and goals.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT IN THE MIND THE STORE PROGRAM MANAGER ROLE

In this role, you will:

  • Coordinate a national marketplace transformation campaign catalyzing major retailers to reduce and eliminate dangerous chemicals and plastics and advance safer solutions.
  • Develop and execute an annual campaign plan that includes both inside and outside strategies to hold corporations accountable and drive change in the retail marketplace.
  • Author, co-author, and/or edit campaign materials, letters to retailers, reports, factsheets, op-eds, blog posts, action alerts, petitions, social media content, and other content for the campaign.
  • Serve as a lead analyst on the Retailer Report Card, including researching and analyzing the policies and practices of top retailers and helping to manage other staff and partners conducting research for the report card. 
  • Identify major trends and opportunities for corporate improvements in alignment with our Mind the Store program, the Four Essential Elements for a Safer Marketplace framework, and state and federal policy goals.
  • Prepare information on toxic chemicals and alternatives for use in retail advocacy campaigns. 
  • Lead meetings with corporate sustainability leaders to identify opportunities for improvements in their efforts to reduce their use of hazardous chemicals and plastics and advance safer solutions.
  • Develop written policy, technical recommendations, and presentations for corporate sustainability leaders.
  • Serve as a spokesperson of the organization with journalists on the Mind the Store program.
  • Represent the organization in webinars, conferences, and other events as a speaker.
  • Identify ways the campaign can build the capacity of the organization through online list building, coalition building, and online fundraising.
  • Assist the Development team in writing and editing grant proposals and reports, and meeting with funders and major donors.

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • At least five years experience in coordinating state or national market or government advocacy campaigns.
  • Track record of executing and winning government or corporate policy campaigns.
  • Undergraduate degree in environmental or public health, toxicology, chemistry, environmental studies, political science, or degree in a relevant field is preferred.
  • Commitment to the mission and vision of Toxic-Free Future.
  • Strong attention to detail with an understanding of broad strategic objectives.
  • Experience and comfort working with journalists, and appearing on camera.  
  • Understanding of and experience coordinating market campaign strategies is a plus. 
  • Ability to take initiative and work with limited supervision. 
  • Skill in analyzing complex issues, summarizing and drawing conclusions, making recommendations, and communicating to others in a clear way, including for lay audiences.  
  • Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills.  
  • Results-oriented, flexible, creative thinker able to work on a range of projects and meet deadlines.  
  • Ability to work independently but also as part of a team. 
  • A demonstrated commitment to social equity and racial justice and an eagerness to understand how these issues play out in communities impacted by toxic chemical exposures. 
  • Curiosity and joy in learning, with a collaborative spirit that seeks to listen, give and receive feedback thoughtfully, and continually grow and improve.
  • Demonstrated comfort with technology, familiarity with computer databases and MS Office software, social media platforms, and ability to utilize online resources effectively.

COMPENSATION

This is a full-time, exempt position with a starting salary range of $70,000-82,000 annually. We offer a generous benefits package including employer-paid medical, dental, and vision insurance; monthly wellness benefit; generous vacation; paid holidays plus two personal days; and a SIMPLE IRA retirement plan with an annual employer contribution. The position can either be remote or hybrid based in Seattle, WA.
