On December 1, 2020, former TFF board member Jean Day passed away from breast cancer—yet her spirit and values continue to guide our work.
Earlier this year, we received an incredibly generous legacy gift from Jean’s estate. It has been an enormous boost to our organization at a critical time. We are deeply grateful to Jean for her extraordinary generosity, which is allowing us to deliver results that are building the toxic-free future she envisioned.
A life rooted in purpose
Jean’s passion for health began in childhood. Raised on a ranch in Jackson, Wyoming, she was exposed to herbicides—an experience that triggered lifelong chemical sensitivities and ignited her dedication to protecting others.
“Jean opened my eyes more than 30 years ago to the challenges of living with chemical sensitivities. However, these challenges never stopped her from helping us fight the widespread use of pesticides and chemicals in our daily lives. She is still helping us and it is so heartwarming to know how much she cared.”
—Laurie Valeriano, Toxic-Free Future Executive Director
As a teen, her family moved to California, settling in Stockton. After college, she taught special education until the mid‑1980s. Her love of science led her to Republic, Washington, where she volunteered at the Stonerose Interpretive Center, studying and photographing plant fossils—discovering community science as both joy and calling.
Her volunteer work eventually led her to a governance role: Jean became a cherished board member of Toxic‑Free Future, bringing her journey full circle—from chemical exposure to an environment and community health advocate.
“On the board with me, she was extraordinarily warm‑hearted, quiet and forceful, with a total commitment to our issues and her work on the board.”
—Dave Stitzhal, former TFF board member
Jean’s vision in motion
Today, Jean’s legacy is fueling transformative scientific research, strategic advocacy campaigns, and educational initiatives dedicated to removing harmful chemicals from homes and communities. Her gift isn’t merely a donation—it’s a living commitment to long-term change.
“Jean was such a dear. My heart is just singing to know she is looking out for us from on high. It would be just like Jean to NEVER forget us and shine the brightness of her star down on our mission. I love you Jean and I always will. Thank you Jean.”
—Karen McDonell, former TFF board member
Jean, thank you. Your legacy is a gift to us all—and an inspiration for others to follow in your footsteps.
