Presenting our 2018 Environmental Health Champions

Dr. Steven Swanson and the Whidbey Water Keepers

When firefighting practices by the military on Whidbey Island led to PFAS-contaminated drinking water for a number of families, the Whidbey Water Keepers jumped into action. This team of citizen activists worked to raise the issue through local information sessions, demanded drinking water get tested, and advocated for the fire fighting foam bill to ensure that all communities on Whidbey and beyond have access to safe drinking water. The Whidbey Water Keepers continue to push for drinking water standards and the phase out of PFAS chemicals. Dr. Stephen Swanson turned a personal experience with PFAS-contaminated drinking water into powerful advocacy for safe drinking water for his family, his neighbors, and the whole state. Dr. Swanson has worked with reporters, spoken with the Navy on Whidbey Island, helped Toxic-Free Future compile drinking water results, and testified before the Department of Ecology and the State Legislature. Dr. Swanson has become a driving force for how Washington addresses the issue of PFAS chemicals. Toxic-Free Future honors these community activists for demanding transparency and action.

Senator Sharon Nelson

Toxic-Free Future honors Washington State Senator Sharon Nelson for her commitment to protecting children’s health and the environment from harmful chemicals. For more than a decade in the legislature, Senator Nelson fought for strong protections for clean water, clean air and a healthy Washington. She worked tirelessly for over 5 years to get the Toxic-Free Kids and Families Act adopted in 2016, which stopped the use of certain toxic flame retardants in children’s products and furniture. In 2018, she was instrumental in her role as Senate Majority Leader in ensuring Washington was the first in the nation to ban dangerous chemicals (PFAS) in food packaging and firefighting foam. We thank Senator Nelson for all of her dedication and incredible work on many issues including the right of children to be toxic-free.
