In Seattle, we are proud to be the home of Denis Hayes, founder of Earth Day and current President and CEO of the Bullitt Foundation. Denis recognized decades ago how critically important it is to end the unnecessary use of dangerous chemicals that contribute to chronic disease. Now more than ever, this must be a public health priority because people with chronic diseases are at increased risk of dying from COVID-19.
Denis also participated in our ground-breaking Pollution in People study where he found out his own body was contaminated with a toxic soup of chemicals from hormone-disrupting PFAS and phthalates to brain-harming mercury and PBDEs (flame retardants). This study and more than a decade of work by TFF and others led Washington state to adopt the ground-breaking Safer Products law to end the use of harmful chemicals and create growing demand for safer alternatives in Washington and beyond.
This year, events to mark the 50th anniversary of Earth Day have been canceled across the world. While large demonstrations can’t happen right now as we all work hard to flatten the COVID-19 curve, we can find new ways to honor this day and demand bold action to protect people and the planet.
To help us all celebrate Earth Day from home, we have assembled our top 10 picks for documentary films that will make you laugh, cry and yell at the TV this Earth Day. All are available now for streaming from the comfort of your own home.
