Safer Chemicals Healthy Families responds to EPA’s list of chemicals for evaluation
Washington, DC — Today the EPA announced the first ten chemicals that will undergo evaluation and regulation under recent reforms to the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). The EPA previously announced 5 chemicals that will be restricted under a different process in the law that applies only to chemicals that build up in the food chain. The EPA list is available at https://www.epa.gov/assessing-and-managing-chemicals-under-tsca/evaluating-risk-existing-chemicals-under-tsca. In response, Andy Igrejas, Director of Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families, issued the following statement:
“We support EPA’s choice of chemicals. The list they announced today is a strong one and appropriate EPA action will strengthen public health and environmental safety. We are particularly glad to see asbestos included on the list. The EPA’s inability to ban asbestos under the old law was a primary catalyst for the recent reforms. Asbestos is a major piece of unfinished business for the agency.
“We will work with EPA to ensure the strongest possible action is taken to protect American families.”
