"I’m a label reader. Every trip to the store involves a careful assessment of what’s coming into my home and into the hands (and mouths) of my two young sons. I am probably more aware of chemical safety than the average consumer, as I have spent the last several years and transitioning away from goods that are likely to contain harmful chemicals to safer alternatives. I use glass instead of plastic food containers. I’ve swapped out the vinyl shower curtain for cloth. And I am thrilled every time I can see clear evidence that I’m avoiding the dangerous chemicals known to me, like the now common “BPA Free” labels on reusable water bottles."
When you have a baby on the way, thinking about school or daycare can seem like a long time away! But it will be here before you know it, so it’s never to soon to start shopping around for healthier environments for your new baby.
It’s April Fools’ Day, and this is no joke – while other big retailers like Target and Walmart are beginning to tackle toxic chemicals, Walgreens has yet to develop a comprehensive plan to address toxic chemicals in the products they sell. USA Today put it in perspective: “that means virtually every grade in every elementary school has at least one […]
I was reminded last night what a powerful and urgent issue we work on. This is a picture of over 200 pairs of fire fighter boots in San Francisco, raising awareness about the increased cancer rates in fire fighter populations. It was part of a campaign called Give Toxics the Boot, where we teamed up […]
When I think of the work fire fighters do every single day, I am humbled. I think of the times I went to the local fire station as a kid to learn about the importance of preventing home fires. I think of the big red fire trucks, safety gear and the bravery these men and […]
Thousands spurred to action across the country
Every year, millions of U.S. workers are exposed to substances which animal studies and human tragedies have shown are carcinogens. Unfortunately, of those chemicals manufactured or processed in the U.S., less than two percent have been tested for carcinogenicity. This is particularly alarming since, based on data relied upon by the Centers for Disease Control […]
It’s March and if you live in a college town like I do, that means one thing… MARCH MADNESS!!! This season, HealthyStuff.org is taking a look into the hazardous chemicals in our favorite University Themed products. We found some pretty nasty stuff in our favorite fan gear, that’s why we’re releasing our “March Badness” study […]
