Key Findings and Recommendations

  • Corporate Commitment: Based on available public information, Nordstrom has failed to commit to reducing toxic chemicals and plastics or supporting safer solutions. Nordstrom should publicly commit to develop and implement a corporate safer chemicals policy and actively explore best practices with peer organizations and outside experts.
  • Transparency: Nordstrom regularly tests products for banned or restricted substances listed in the American Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA) restricted substance list (RSL). However, there is no indication Nordstrom requires suppliers to disclose chemical ingredients or plastics to the retailer or consumers. Nordstrom should require ingredient disclosure, verify accuracy, and evaluate its chemical footprint.
  • Ban the Bad: Nordstrom restricts chemicals listed in the AAFA RSL that it has adopted but has not set or reported progress on these chemicals. Nordstrom should join other retailers in setting public, time-bound goals for reduction and elimination of chemicals and plastics of high concern and report on its progress in meeting those goals.
  • Safer Solutions: There is no indication that Nordstrom has supported the development or sale of safer products. Nordstrom should work to ensure substitutes for chemicals and plastics of high concern are safer for the health of consumers, communities, workers, and the environment.
